Principal Town Planner
John Rowell
MPIA, MURP, BA
John heads up the town planning section at TFA and has extensive experience in both the local government and private consultancy sectors of town planning. In his ten years in the profession, John has predominantly worked in development assessment and planning appeals since completing a Masters of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Queensland in 2001.
John has applied his planning experience in various international and national settings including managing the planning appeals unit at the London Borough of Hackney council (United Kingdom) for over two years. Currently he liaises with numerous local and State government authorities all over Australia for national and international clients on major development applications and infrastructure projects.
Recent medium to large scale infrastructure projects John has provided town planning advice on, and/or obtained the necessary development approvals for, include: 
- Port Coogee Bay Marina (WA) – retail and commercial fuel dispensing marina
- Ethanol Plant (Colleambally, NSW) – preliminary advice on a Part3A approval for an ethanol plant in Colleambally, NSW
- Caltex Refinery and Terminal (QLD) – building works on heritage land
- Redland Bay Ferry Terminal (QLD) – ferry refuelling facility and terminal
John also regularly works on smaller scale development projects including small to medium sized commercial centres, service stations, residential (infill) development and telecommunications facilities.
John is a member of the Planning Institute of Australia and maintains an active presence in a number of organisations within the development industry. He is also committed to education within the planning profession and currently assists the University of Queensland in a casual capacity, giving guest lectures and assisting lecturers in general course work.
