With recent disruptions to global fuel supply chains, TFA Project Group have revisited its 2023 White Paper Part 3 – Low Emissions Vehicles, an Australian Perspective to examine the practicality of achieving fuel security in Australia and the potential role of locally produced, sustainable low carbon liquid fuels.
There will be a long-term demand for liquid fuels in Australia up to and beyond 2050. Key sectors including heavy transport, mining, aviation, construction and shipping are difficult to electrify. Even by 2050, estimated consumption is in the order of 30 billion litres per annum. This paper evaluates a range of options to strengthen Australia’s fuel security in this context.
In Part 4 of The Role of Low Carbon Liquid Fuels in Australia’s Fuel Security, we explore several pathways proposed by industry to improve fuel security including:
- Further electrification of the transport sector
- Additional domestic fuel stocks to comply with the IEA days cover obligation
- Prioritising and expanding the use of biofuels and low carbon liquid fuel
- Upgrading of existing refineries
- Construction of additional refineries
- Construction of a gas to liquids plant

Part 3, released in July 2023, examined whether Australian feedstocks and available technologies could produce sufficient sustainable liquid fuels to replace fossil fuels. Download Part 3 here.
